We're live: nu:legal raises €1.3M to give European businesses a faster way to handle legal work

Today is a big day for us. nu:legal is officially live, and we're announcing a €1.3 million funding round led by Caesar Ventures.

We set out to build something that didn't exist yet: a third option between expensive law firms and unreliable generic AI. A way for European businesses to handle the everyday legal work that quietly eats their week. Contracts, terminations, privacy policies, data processing agreements. All without losing weeks to paperwork or compromising on quality.

The problem we're here to fix

European businesses face a dilemma when it comes to legal work. On one side: slow, expensive law firms built for a different era. On the other: generative AI tools that produce confident but unreliable answers, with no accountability behind them. Meanwhile, regulatory pressure keeps climbing.

The scale of the problem is enormous. German SMEs alone spend an average of 32 hours a month on legal and compliance work, a burden the KfW estimates costs the German economy around €61 billion every year. That's roughly 7% of every working week, spent on admin instead of building. The pattern holds across Europe.

Businesses don't lack the will to handle legal work properly. They lack a system designed for how they actually operate.

What we've built

nu:legal is custom legal technology for European businesses, co-developed with leading lawyers and law firms.

For routine work, our technology handles the heavy lifting in hours instead of weeks: drafting employment contracts, terminations, formal warnings, privacy policies, data processing agreements, deletion concepts, processing records, and more. Every workflow is built by expert lawyers with at least five years of experience and continuously refined based on legal expert feedback and real-world use.

For higher-stakes work, you can add expert lawyer review. A practicing lawyer signs off in 24 hours, with their real name and license behind the output. Their accountability. Their professional standing.

We're launching with employment law and data privacy, the two areas costing European businesses the most time, and we'll continually expand our practice areas through the rest of 2026 and beyond, starting with commercial contracts.

Why we built it the way we did

Most legal technology has been built either to help lawyers work faster or to replace lawyers entirely. We don't think either approach is right.

nu:legal is built with lawyers. The workflows on our platform are co-developed by specialist practitioners. The technology handles the parts that can be standardised. The lawyers handle the parts that need judgement. The legal profession isn't the problem we're solving. The system around it is.

We also believe legal work needs to be specific to the jurisdictions it serves. You can't translate a US product into German and expect it to understand a Kündigungsschutzgesetz matter, or a Datenschutzerklärung compliant with both GDPR and BDSG. So we built nu:legal specifically for German law at launch, hosted in the EU, with technical and organisational safeguards designed around legal confidentiality requirements.

Who's backing us

This round was led by Caesar Ventures, with participation from tech entrepreneurs, AI operators, additional venture capital investors, and partners from Freshfields and other leading European law firms.

"nu:legal is building a true end-to-end legal services platform, not just another point solution. By combining an exceptional ex-Freshfields team with a full-stack AI platform and human-in-the-loop workflows, they are uniquely positioned to transform legal services for SMEs." — Carolin Gabor, Managing Partner, Caesar Ventures

We're particularly proud that lawyers from leading European firms backed us alongside the VCs and operators. It's a signal that the people inside the legal profession see the same problem we do, and want to be part of the solution.

What comes next

For the next few months, we're opening access gradually through a controlled waitlist. The goal is to make sure every business that gets in has a brilliant experience from day one. We'll expand into additional European markets over the medium term.

If you've been waiting for a faster, more accessible way to handle the legal work your business has to do anyway, you can join the waitlist at nulegal.eu.

Thank you to everyone who got us here: our team, our investors, our pilot customers, and the lawyers and law firms who've been part of building this from day one. We're just getting started.
