Product Designer (UX/UI)

Berlin/Potsdam · Full-time · Start: from August

What it's about

nu:legal is building the first AI platform that takes legal, regulatory, and bureaucratic processes off companies' plates end-to-end. Not for law firms, but for the companies themselves, from mid-sized businesses to fast-growing teams that finally want their legal handled without the hassle. We're a small, ambitious team in Berlin/Potsdam.

You own the entire design area as the first and central designer in the company. That means no art director and no huge structure. Instead, real influence, real responsibility, and a product you shape from the start.

What you'll do

  • Own UX as your core focus: plan and run user tests with real users, analyze them, and turn the insights directly into product improvements.
  • Evolve the nu:legal product, from UX concept through UI design to implementation in Figma.
  • Actively maintain and grow our existing design system, components, tokens, and patterns, so it scales with the product and stays usable for engineering.
  • Work closely with engineering, marketing, and management, iteratively and directly.
  • Beyond the product, help shape what we show the outside world: brand, marketing assets, and website.

What to expect

We're honest upfront so you can decide whether this fits you:

  • We're early and small. Priorities shift, and not every day is plannable.
  • The load is uneven: quieter stretches alternate with very intense ones.
  • Roles overlap. As the only designer, you'll sometimes do things outside the classic design profile.
  • We give direct, honest feedback and expect the same from you.
  • You'll often make design decisions without a ready template and without a second design opinion in the room.

If that excites you more than it scares you, you'll fit in well here.

What you should bring

Required

  • At least 3 years of professional experience in product design / UX and UI. You can independently run a complete design process.
  • You're a Figma pro: components, variants, auto layout, design tokens, design library.
  • You can make and defend clear, well-reasoned design decisions, even when you're the only designer in the room.
  • You're good at reducing complexity: not leaving things out, but making them understandable.
  • You're comfortable with AI tools and ready to use them to optimize and rethink processes.
  • You bring your own ideas, work in a structured way, and take ownership of the entire design area.
  • You question existing workflows and product decisions, are open to real innovation, and use AI actively as a tool.

Nice to have

  • Experience at an early-stage startup or with a product still being built.
  • Experience with vibe coding is a real plus.
  • Interest in legal tech, AI-driven workflows, or regulated domains.
  • You've built or co-built a design system before, not just used one.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary plus equity. You build with us, you participate in the upside.
  • Real design ownership over a product from day one.
  • Direct collaboration with the founders and a small, ambitious team.
  • Regular home-office days and one month of remote work anywhere.
  • Top equipment (laptop, design monitor).

Interview process

  • Intro call (~30 min): a first read on both sides and a check against the honest "What to expect".
  • Design interview: we go through your portfolio, your process, and your UX decisions together.
  • Practical design task: compact and on real problems, not a throwaway test.
  • Meet the team.
  • Final conversation with the CEO/founder.
  • Offer.

Include a link to your work (portfolio, case studies, Figma files). You'll convince us more with real content and solid design process and UX decisions than with AI-generated portfolios. We respond to every serious application within two weeks.
